Moveclim sets up the first comparative analysis of tropical biodiversity along altitudinal gradients in multiple islands. This project assembles an international and multidisciplinary network across the islands of La Réunion (Mascarenes), Guadeloupe (Antilles), Pico (Azores), La Palma (Canaries) and Tahiti (French Polynesia). Partners with expertise in the field of biodiversity research and conservation include universities, research centres and national parks.
The varroa mite, a parasite affecting bees, is present throughout the world, although a few areas still remain unaffected. The mites enter the hive and attach themselves to the bee’s abdomen in order to suck its blood. Apart from the damage they cause to hives, varroa mites are responsible for the transmission of new viruses and diseases on a local and global scale.
Several techniques are used in the fight against fruit and vegetable flies in the Indian Ocean. One is biological control, using Psyttalia fletcheri, a parasitoid which lays its eggs directly in the fruit fly larvae.
